Her mother is the reason she was introduction to jazz music when she was just a little girl. Khan was a lover of blues and rhythm when she was a teenager and, at 11 joined a group of girls called the Crystalettes which included the sister Taka. In the late 1960s Khan participated in several civil rights rallies together with her father's wife Connie an avid fan of the movement. She also joined the Black Panther Party after befriending an activist from the group and Chicago born Fred Hampton in 1967. Many believe she got the nickname Chaka within the Panthers but Khan claims it was Yoruba Baba who gave her that name at 13 when she first joined. When she left the Panthers she stopped going to high school after she had studied at Calumet High School. Her first gig was around Chicago with small groups, including her boyfriend Hassan Khan. Chaka and Hassan got married in 1970.
